What Is Brand Photography?

Brand photography goes beyond a polished headshot—it’s a collection of intentional visuals that tell your story, connect with your audience, and showcase your business in its best light. See it as the visual footprint of your company: the headshots, the lifestyle shots, the behind-the-scenes, product/service shots that cause people to be willing to utter the term yes even before they ever sit across from you.

Brand photography is so crucial to your business, since it shows your customers who you are. It communicates your brand message visually and attracts the right customers to you. By doing a brand shoot, not only do you create a bank of images that you’re proud of and represent your work, but you also have content ready to use for anything from ads to social to web and more.

So many businesses miss the importance of brand photography and use generic stock imagery. How many times have you seen the same stock image used again and again on your competitors’ sites? If everyone looks the same, how are you supposed to stand out?! Brand photography is the key!

We have dedicated 15+ years to creating images that assist artists, writers, dance schools, and small artistic businesses in looking crisp, selling smart, and igniting that hell yes feeling.

Why Brand Photography Matters

First Impressions With Your Imagery Build Customer Trust

Your audience decides in seconds if they trust you. Strong visuals make that decision easier—showing professionalism, confidence, and credibility right away. And a well-planned brand shoot can give you everything that you need to make that happen. If you work with a professional brand photographer, you will have a solid plan for what your brand should present as and a shot list that helps you get exactly what you need to show your audience who you are.

Consistency Builds Recognition

When your photos are consistent across your website, social media, and marketing, people remember you.

Did you know that on average it takes someone nine times seeing an ad before they’ll even consider buying? And only 10% (or less) of your audience is seeing each post you put out! So consistency is key, especially on social media. You want people to see your post, recognize it as you, and want more. If you regularly use different stock images instead of your brand imagery, you’re not likely to stick in their mind since there’s no consistency.

Recognition = trust = more conversions.

Confidence Turns Into Visibility—and Visibility Into Sales

Belief fosters progress. Our clients often tell us: “Once I updated my brand photos, I felt ready to show up everywhere.” That confidence translates into more visibility, collaborations, and sales. We feel the same! Anytime we do a new brand shoot, we are pumped to get our latest images up on the site, on social media, etc. We want to show them off! Which means we show up more often and more boldly.

Your audience wants to see you. Show them who you are and why they should work with you.

How to Know When It’s Time to Update Your Visuals

Your images should evolve with you. If the photos, images, or brand components you currently have no longer represent who you are or where you’re going in business, it is probably time for a refresh. Some indications you need a refresh are:

  • You’ve evolved—your services, style, or audience have shifted.
  • Your current images look dated or look different across platforms.
  • You’re rebranding, launching a new product, or stepping into a bigger position.
  • You don’t feel excited to share your photos or designs because they don’t feel “like you” anymore.
  • When the images you have no longer resonate with the energy and impact of what you do, it’s time for a refresh. New images enable you to move ahead in clarity, consistency, and confidence.
  • You’re tired of using the same images again and again and are no longer inspired to share.

The Key Elements of Brand Photography

Portraits & Lifestyle Images

Yes, you’ll get updated headshots—but also relaxed, personality-filled shots that make you approachable and relatable. These can be of you and/or your team! Think about who you want your audience to know at your business. These are the people who should be in your brand photos.

Behind the Scenes Photos

Exposing the process lets others identify more with the craftsmanship. Think of your space, the service or product you offer in progress, and detail shots behind the scenes of what it takes to make it happen. Our most significant need is always photos of the two of us working together on a project! We so often work remotely and on different projects at once that we don’t have a way to show the constant collaboration that is happening between us as we work through a project. I mean, we are ALWAYS on the phone with each other! But there’s not a great way to show that connection without brand photography.

Product or Service in Action

Whether you’re selling a product or a service, imagery depicting it in action makes people understand and appreciate what you’re doing. They see the energy you bring to your work and whether that fits what they’re looking for. They know the intention you put into your process and feel like they have a sneak peek of the experience. These are so key to sharing more with your audience. Let them in on why you do this and how it will work, and they will understand more and trust you.

Custom Storytelling Shots

Props, colors, and curated details weave your brand identity into every image, making your photos uniquely yours. This is where stock photography can’t do the work you want it to. It’s always generic since it’s meant for many people to use. A brand shoot helps you capture those tiny elements that make you different. Show off your personality or aspects of your work that feel so uniquely you! We like to include food in many of our shots since we always make the excuse to order lunch when we’re working together. And our favorite Dim Sum place around the corner is a key feature on our social media–it always gets the most engagement since everyone wants to meet with us there!

Brand Photography vs. Headshots

Headshots are just the first step! Headshots are important so that your audience can link a face to a name. But they don’t tell much about you. These are key for your about page, your email signature, speaking engagements or conference bios, press features, and LinkedIn profile photos.

Brand Photography provides you with a full library of images that communicate your vibe, process, values, and story. It brings them into your world and makes them feel connected to you and your work. These are more useful for all of your marketing needs. The more you show up, the more you earn trust.

Think about it this way: A headshot gets the door to the room open. Brand photography holds them interested and committed to a yes.

How the Process Works

Step 1: Strategy & Planning

We start with a consultation and branding questionnaire to uncover your goals, audience, and visual style. Moodboards and location planning ensure every detail aligns with your story.

Step 2: Shot List & Schedule Creation

Based on your goals and needs, we create a planned shotlist (10-15 concepts per hour blocked) and draft up a schedule for the day. The schedule is thorough! The more we stay on task the more images you get to pick from. We include not only the type of shot, but also the props, wardrobe, featured individuals, and the desired angle of the final photo. Having a specific idea of the goal of that shot helps us get EXACTLY what you need. But we also use the time to shoot plenty of other options. Each photo is ranked as “must have”, “nice to have”, or “if time allows” so that we know what to prioritize in our time with you and the schedule is based on that.

Step 3: The Photoshoot

We make this process seamless and help direct your body language so you never feel uncomfortable in front of the camera. We will shoot a multitude of images—portraits, lifestyle photos, process details—so you have a variety of images for all platforms. Props, colors, and curated details weave your brand identity into every image, making your photos uniquely yours.

Step 4: Delivery & Use

You will be provided a chosen gallery of high-definition images ready for printing and online usage. These images are designed to scale across platforms—your website, blog posts, press articles, etc.

We also provide you with a guide suggesting how to start using your imagery when you get it! It can be overwhelming at first, but updating one photo at a time across your media will not only be fun but also last you a long time.

We create brand photos that inspire and connect.

How to Utilize Your Brand Photos

Website & About Page: Make a strong first impression.

Your brand photographs can be integrated throughout your site to give a harmonious, compelling experience. Incorporate a friendly shot of yourself on your homepage to set up instant connection, and scatter lifestyle or behind-the-scenes images throughout your About page in order to bring your personality and process to life. Service or product pages are aided by photographs which demonstrate your work in action, and banner images and callout sections can include photographs which capture your brand’s personality and aesthetic. Regular, thoughtful use of your brand photographs makes your site refined, professional, and undeniably you, encouraging visitors to connect and take the next step.

Regular updates to your website’s brand imagery not only keep your brand looking current, but it also makes your site more interesting for visitors to come back to!

Social Media: Establish consistency and recognition.

On social media, your brand images are the visual thread that pulls all of your content together. Make use of them for profile and cover shots in order to make a consistently uniform first impression, and cycle them through post, reel, and story in order to keep your feed classy and on-brand. Detail shots and lifestyle shots are perfect for captioned tips, behind-the-scenes, or stories of your clients, but higher-edited portraits can be utilized in order to frame announcements, promotions, or introductions. Consistently making use of your brand photography across all of your platforms not only makes your content instantaneously recognizable—it makes people believe in you and keep their attention.

One of our favorite things to do on social is to use pinned content to create a visual banner that uses your updated brand images each quarter, or however often you decide to refresh your brand images!

Email Marketing: Embody professionalism and charisma.

Through your email messages, branded images add personality and professionalism which cannot be achieved by text. Add a friendly face shot into your welcome campaign such that subscribers can put a face to your name. Include lifestyle or behind-the-scenes photographs within your newsletters such that they look more attractive and attention-provoking, and personal to YOU. Branded images are perfect when advertising new specials, demonstrating clients, or holiday specials—making your messages pop in busy inboxes. Consistently supporting your message with personal visuals presents a cohesive experience which encourages familiarity and credibility.

Press & Partnerships: Look polished when opportunities arise.

When press opportunities or opportunities to collaborate are presented, professional brand photography in advance prepares you to capitalize on them. Media, potential collaborators, and event organizers all want high-quality images—and the appropriate photographs make you look refined, believable, and ready. A headshot for a podcast, an action photo for a newspaper feature, or lifestyle shots for a partnership are all opportunities where your brand photography presents you at your absolute best and enables others easily to incorporate your work. Being ready enables you to respond with a confident yes when opportunities are presented.

Common Misconceptions Surrounding Brand Photography

“I don’t need it until I’m bigger.”
Reality: You want to connect with your customers from the very start. Don’t wait to show them who you are. Be genuine and authentic from the start and they’ll be your biggest fans for a long time to come.

“Stock photos are sufficient enough.”
Reality: Stock photos will not build the trust and awareness your distinct brand calls for. They work in a pinch, but they’re not a solution for connecting with your audience.

“I’m not photogenic.”
Fact: Anyone can look natural and confident with the help of a professional. It’s our job to make you look best, not turn you into someone you’re not.

Retouching to Refresh Your Brand Imagery

If a comprehensive brand photo shoot isn’t on the horizon, you don’t need to hold your images back. A retouching brand update can give new life to what you do have—refining old images so they look current, cohesive, and better true to you. We can even design proprietary composite images that take ordinary stock and make them one-of-a-kind, on-brand images that express your personality. It’s a flexible, affordable way to refresh your presence and move forward with assurance until the time is right for a complete shoot.
