In a recent project, I enjoyed working on a dance studio brand refresh for Feel the Beat, a nonprofit that makes music and movement accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and those with and without disabilities. The goal was to modernize the organization’s logo and visual identity to align with its mission of inclusivity and innovation. This project highlights the power of thoughtful branding in the dance studio world.

A Vibrant Approach to Branding for Dance Studios

Understanding the organization’s mission and the audience’s unique needs was pivotal in the creative process. For this dance studio brand refresh, I aimed to preserve the essence of their original logomark—particularly the hand shape that had become synonymous with their brand—while infusing new life and energy into the design. By incorporating elements that suggest movement and rhythm, I developed a dynamic logo that maintained its recognizability while introducing a modern, vibrant feel. The final design featured flowing lines through the letters, creating an animated effect symbolizing the beat. This approach ensured that the logo felt energetic and inclusive, representing their innovative technology and the joy of dance.

Going Beyond the Logo: A Comprehensive Visual Identity

A common misconception is that visual branding is complete with just a logo. However, a successful dance studio brand refresh goes far beyond that. It incorporates fonts, brand colors, layout design elements, and occasionally iconography that all work together as a cohesive style.

At the outset, Feel the Beat’s branding relied on a monochromatic purple palette. While consistent, it lacked the dynamic energy reflective of its movement-focused mission. To address this, I expanded the palette to include complementary yellows, subtle blue hues, and gradient tones for added depth. This variety provides flexibility in separating content across the website and printed materials while maintaining a cohesive brand identity.

Custom Elements for Enhanced Engagement

Feel the Beat’s audience includes individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, making visual communication essential. To better serve this community, I designed a custom ASL alphabet and iconography tailored to their brand. These elements visually enhance online statistics and data, breaking up dense information while maintaining a cohesive identity. Instead of relying on generic stock images, these custom designs seamlessly integrate into the Feel the Beat universe, ensuring consistency across all platforms.

To further enrich their visual identity, I incorporated movement-inspired shapes like concentric corner circles, circular photo frames, and flowing lines. These playful elements are now staples in their flyers, social media content, and website, adding vibrancy and movement to every design.
